AGM Destination: Indianapolis, Indiana
By Candy Williams
Publicity Chair
Indianapolis, Indiana is known for the
Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the Indianapolis Colts, NBAs
Indiana Pacers and the 2010 AGM.
On March 26-27, 2010, AGM delegates and
their families will head to this Midwestern city and a fun
weekend hosted by Jaguar Association of Greater Indiana
(JAGIN). Cliff Burk and his hard-working committee promise
a good time will be had by all.
When officers, board members and delegates
arent attending to JCNA business at the board of directors
meeting on Friday and the AGM on Saturday, they will be
able to enjoy some of the citys finest attractions.
The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is celebrating
its Centennial Era, commemorating the 100th anniversary
of the facility in 2009 and the 100th anniversary of the
Indianapolis 500-Mile Race in 2011. The Speedway museum
offers a rare glimpse into auto racings rich history,
which includes Jaguars past participation in Formula
1 events.
The city also boasts a fine collection
of museums, art galleries and historic monuments, as well
as great shopping and gondola rides along the famous Indy
Canal. (Dont miss the South Bend Chocolate Co. candy
shop and café downtown in Dupont Circle!)
The AGM host hotel, the Crown Plaza at
Union Station, is historic in itself. Located in the heart
of downtown Indianapolis, the Romanesque revival-style hotel
features 273 guestrooms and is housed in Americas
first Union Station. The railroad station, built in 1888,
served passengers from four local railroad companies and
was one of the busiest transfer points in the country.
The hotel is best known for its 26 authentic
Pullman train car guest rooms, renovated and named after
prominent personalities of the early 1900s, including Charlie
Chaplin, Winston Churchill, Amelia Earhart and Diamond Jim
Brady. The train cars décor matches their era,
and they are available for an additional charge.
Another unique feature of the AGM host
hotel are 28 ghost people statues dressed in
authentic period clothing, carrying real items from their
times, depicting the history of thousands of travelers through
Union Station. Made of white fiberglass, they were created
by Indianapolis native Gary Rittenhouse. The hotel also
features Pullmans Restaurant & Lounge, a fitness
center and indoor pool and high-speed Internet access.
Standard room rate for the AGM will be
$109 per night plus tax and possible daily parking fees
for those who drive. The number of rooms is limited, so
early registration is advised.
On Saturday, March 27, the AGM will take
place in the hotels palatial Grand Hall, an elegant
venue with its distinctive arches, columns, Terrazzo floors
and a stained glass barrel ceiling and two 20-foot leaded
stained glass wheel windows.
Following the business meeting and one
or more technical sessions, the awards banquet will be held
that evening in the Illinois Room. Top-ranked participants
in rally, slalom and concours competition during 2009 will
receive their awards, and winning club newsletter articles,
photos and editors will be honored.
Plans are still being made by the AGM
committee for possible side trips, a silent auction fundraiser
and more. More details, along with an application, will
be released as they are made available.
