Should/can the transmission filter be replaced on a 1999 XJ8? Someone told me that it was not designed to be replaced.

I think the confusion is in the wording. The filter can be replaced; it's just that there isn't a recommendation for a maintenance interval like the earlier cars. They called it "filled for life" and thus had no published service interval. In practice, barring a leak or some internal failure, we have not had any problem with that. So, based on my experience, I'd recommend not servicing it.

However, there are some among us that just can't fathom that idea, and will say I'm the one that's nuts. I can just say from experience, that you run as much a chance of introducing problems as you do preventing them, in these and later model cars.

My two cents.......

Thank you. I have about 160,000 on my car and yesterday I had a two second moment where the car would not go into reverse. Also when I returned home I heard a little "chattering" when I shut the car off. I am thinking that maybe it needs some attention.

Also what fluid can I use instead of the Jaguar fluid?
