Hesitation during acceleration

I recently added a beautiful 66 Coupe to my collection. It was restored by Reggie Ray around 1993 and has been in a private collection and rarely used since that time. The car starts, idles and runs extremely well other than the fact that there is a problem during hard acceleration. If I'm smooth, it will run up in RPM with no issues. Under sprited acceleration there is quite a bit of popping, missing and bucking. Plugs, wires and distributor all look good (electronic ignition). All fuel filters are clean including the screens on the banjos leading to the carbs. Also, it will accelerate without issue when not under load.

Any input as to what to check next would be greatly appreciated.

Did you check the oil in the carb dampers?

Have you tried an octane booster such as RedLine Lead Substitute? My 66 Coupe will buck and backfire to the intake manifold on hard accel from low rpm w/ ordinary premium (93 octane). Check the timing has maximum 8deg advance.

Joe,
Interesting, I have a 1968 FHC which I bought from Reggie ray in 1996. Great car, excellent restoration.

Mine sat for about a year, I changed plugs, oiled the distribute, oiled and tuned the carbs, and added a bottle of Sea Foam to the gas and have not had a buck since.

I recommend the sea foam, it is a great product.

Thanks to all for the input. I added leaded racing fuel to what was left in the tank and ten miles later, all is well! It's refreshing to have the simple and first attempt work once in a while. Jacques, I would be interested in knowing more about your car. My mistake on the original posting as this car was actually restored in 2003, not 1993 as stated.

Happy Motoring!
