In the near future, I need to replace the battery on my 2003 XJR. The owners manual says that when the battery is replaced a code has to be entered into the radio to get it to function. The manual says to refer to the Audio Handbook. The Audio Handbook says nothing about a code!? Anybody know how to find out what the code is? It would be nice to have it BEFORE I actually need it.

J.C.,

I've been told that the code is on a placard on the bottom of the radio. I know--that's not any help but, that is the best I can do. Maybe a call to a dealer would be a better sorce of info, unless someone of the forum jumps in to help---you know there is someone out there that could.

Your radio does have a code function, but if it is properly set for US spec the code is disabled. If it is set for Europe it will require the code when the battery is hooked back up.

Replace your battery, and if it asks for a code re-post to this thread. I can help you get the code and the market reset.

Good luck!

Thanks Steven, it is a US spec car. If the code is required, I will repost.

I'm sorry Jerry, but I have to rain on your parade.

Please, never, NEVER advocate what you describe with cars later than a Series III or early XJS! In this day and age, with all the electronics incorporated in these cars that should NEVER be attempted. While you may have gotten away with it once, the risk is way too great. It is much better to just have to reset clocks and radio stations. Battery chargers today also have sophisticated electronics in some cases, and not all users are even aware of it. Some automatic chargers would see the disconnection of the battery as you did and interpret that as a flat battery. These chargers in some cases kick up to a much higher voltage to "kick start" the charging process. Without a battery there to absorb that voltage, that can be disastrous with some on-board modules.

Always be safe, rather than sorry.
