Lug Nuts

When Jaguar engineers designed the 2005 Jags, they did an outstanding job, however when it came to Alloy wheels and lug nuts, they had too many Fish&Chips that day.

Like on airplanes, dissimilar metals do not get along at all. A wheel nut built with a Steel washer that presses against an alloy wheel is a sure fire setup for the two to freeze together.

Trying to rotate my tires on my XJ8L has ended in fustration and a job not completed due to nuts that just refuse to break loose.

At first I thought I had a locking nut on each wheel, but do not. Some nuts are just frozen to the wheel. On the nuts removed, the steel washers are all rusted from the elements. Of course the nuts being covered with the alluminum shield doesn't help.

Have any of you experienced this and come up with a better why of doing this, or am I the only guy around wanting to do some of the maintenance on his car?

Hi Garfield,
sounds like the last guy who took off the rims used an air gun to replace the nuts..........as usual most these monkeys bang them on........ not thinking about the possibility someone may want to remove them who has no air gun.......... a piece of steel pipe added to the wrench will usually break them free.
A simple coating of COPPER ANTI SEIZE liberally applied will prevent further problems

Thanks for the reply Art, I'll take the advice and I agree about the ham fisted Monkeys with an air gun. I had to get mine out to do the job and have decided to replace all the Jag nuts with new chrome ones like most all other cars use. That will prevent any future dissimilar metal problems.

Garfield,

STOP!

You guys were right the first time, some idiot with an overpowered air gun. But believe me you'll be better off treating the original lug nuts with anti-seize than going to chrome nuts. The originals have the treated/plated [what ever you want to call it] washers made on them and are expressly for alloy wheels. I should add that that's the reason they are $20.00 apiece. The same goes, for instance, for the bolts that attach your aluminum wings [fenders] and other bolt on parts, the bolts are specially treated to resist the electrolysis/corrosion that comes with dissimilar metals.

Anti-seize and proper torque are your answer.

Regardless of who or how they were tightened it is worth remembering that severe overtightening "stretches" and weakens the stud. Torque wrenches are fine if you know the figure. As a guide I tell owners to look at the size of wheel wrench the manufacturer provides, that is made for the average man to fully tighten! As for lubrication, a dab of oil on thread and mating surfaces is just fine.

Point taken, but respectfully disagree.

Torque is the only answer, it doesn't vary no matter how burly or wimpy the operator. The "average man" can vary widely.

2004 XJ Torque = 115-135 Nm or 85-100 lb/ft.

The shouldered Jaguar lug nuts should have anti seize or synthetic engine oil applied to the mating surfaces, otherwise corrosion will happen and difficulties will be encountered if the wheels are on for a long time without being removed............. An assembly of this type cannot be correctly torqued without the parts being able to move against and past each other smoothly.......... All lug nuts should be checked after doing a couple of hundred miles or so..........especially on alloy rims more so than steel.........

Well, the idea about replacing the Jag wheel nuts with "stoebought" chrome nuts is out the window. The Jaguar alloy wheel lug holes are not beveled as with other wheels, the holes have a "flat" face, so will not accept a standard lug nut. That's the reason for the Jag nut being made with flat washers.
Two of the nuts on my car were more or less trashed taking them off, so I had to order two more. Owners take heed. Take good care of those little buggers and insure you, or who ever removes yours, takes good care of them.
Running down to the local auto house will not produce them. Your dealer or some other Jag parts house just thinks they are little jewels---in fact they cost so much I bought an extra and will have it mounted in a new ring for the better half.

Cheers
