Brake Pads /Wheel Bearings

I have a spring project planned to replace the brake pads on my 1995 XJS. My first question is to see if anyone one has a recommendation for a good brand of pads?

My second question is about wheel bearings. While I have the wheels off is there any secrets to removing the outside bearings to inspect and repack? I have not done this myself since I repacked the bearings on a 1948 Plymouth.

I gotta back George here, for sure.

Nobody, repeat, nobody has more interest in making sure brake pads are long lasting, quiet, EASY ON ROTORS and produce as little dust as possible, than the manufacturer does.

Aftermarket manufacturers couldn't care less if their pads eat rotors or damage wheels with metallic brake dust, they have absolutely no responsibility for them. Sure, they may replace the pads six times over, but in the process they count on hitting you for the rotors, hardware etc. along the way.

As in everything.........follow the money!

My two cents........

Edit: Of course if you are going to the track regularly, that's a horse of an entirely different color! :-)

Jerry, have the front bearings ever been removed for cleaning and repacking? It's a commonly neglected service. But, anyway, there's no trick to removing the oouter bearings for a peeak--remove the dust cap, cotter pin, nut, washer...and wriggle the bearing out. I'll wager it's dry, and if it is, the inner bearing is probably dry as well.

Remove the calipers and hubs for a bearing repack is fundamentally the same as most other cars but there are a few tricks. If you want to have ago at it we can help.

As for pads, yes, the safest bet is OEM pads. Whatever is being sold now by Jaguar (or Jurid) probably isn't the exact same composition as was used 17 years ago but it should be close enough to be trouble-free.

However, I think the others paint an overly bleak pciture of aftermarket choices....lots of good ones out there. But, yes, the easiest choice is OEM from Jaguar.

Cheers
