Steven Petry, or any other knowledable person.
I'm looking at a 2000 4.0 S-Type and have asked this question once before with no response, so Steven/ Guys, do you know if the S-Type that does not have the navigation system, is prewired for a Navigation system. I know that some factories use a wiring bundle that is more or less generic and only use the plugs necessary for the cars setup. If it is, then it should be possible to find a nav system to put in the car.
Any idea's?

Garfield,
I can't answer the wiring question but your looking at a major expense to add that to the car. I had a 2000 S-type with Navigation and had to buy all of the region CD's. If you install original equipment then the navigatin discs are not DVD but CD based. There are 8 CD's and region 3 is almost impossible to find. Navtech sells the CD's until the run out but three years ago they were charging $300.00 per region.
I'd be more concerned witht he lile son the car as they can have Nicasal and chain tensior issues. My transmission went out at around 68000 miles. I loved the car and hated to trad eit but did on a 2004 XJ8 which I love as well.

Thanks Jim. I was just thinking that if the car is pre-wired, it might be possible to get the nav head and disk unit, used, from one of the many used parts house's. However, maybe not. Surely when a salvaged auto comes in, they don't just disregard items like that, or I wouldn't think they would.
From what you say about the disk, once a fellow got the set, he or she might never buy another. My 05/XJ8L doesn't have a nav system either ( and like you, I love the car) but we use a Garmin GPS unit that has a 4.3 inch screen and I can't think of anything that would perform better. The S-Type--unlike the XJ, has the space in the console the same size as the head of the Nav system. If it were prewired, removing whats there and replacing it with the nav head shouldn't present that big of a problem. I'm not sure of that however.
Anyway, your other comments are to be considered as well, and prior to any purchase, those issues would most certainly have to be addressed.
Thanks again.
Regards

Hi Garfield,
Alas, the S-Type either has NAV when built, or it doesn't have it. The only Jags we could add Navigation to were the 2000-2001 XJ's. That was the car with no screen map, it only had turn-by-turn in the radio display and voice prompts. And let me tell ya, it was an expensive proposition, I did three, maybe four of them.
So, you'll have to rely on a Tom-Tom or something similar.
Cheers,

Garfield,,
The navigation screen on the 2000 S-type is in the same place as the tape drawere on the dash. I assume you could retrofit a Garmin in that area but I'm not so sure how good it would look. The discs are all out of date. Shortly after I paid full boat for the region I live in I was on a road that had been built a few years prior but not before the disc was made. I looked at the map and saw I was moving out in the middle of no where. If price isn't the problem shoot for a 2003 or above.

That's a great point Jim. I should have thought about it a little more before I posted before.
Garfield, if you are serious about an S-Type, a 2003 or later model year is really a much better choice; definitely worth the price difference. The second generation is a better car, and the navigation data updates can still be had, at least for now. [see www.navigation.com/jaguar] The current dvd is 2009-2010 at $199.00
In essence, the 2003 and later S-Type underpinnings are the platform that would become the 2004 XJ, less the air suspension.
I also should clarify that in addition to the 2000-2001 XJ8, the 2009 XF can have navigation dealer installed as well.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the info on the year model. I'm in no hurry, so I have plenty of time to find a nice one------maybe with Nav.--------at a good price.
See my new post on balancing wheels.
