came on today in 2005 XKR. Usual suspects please? Haven't taken it out to pull a code. It's in limp mode. Help, suggestions or first steps?

You don't need to pull the trans to get the codes. I had the same experience last year and discovered that 2nd gear had gone away. I was informed that "limp mode" locks the trans in overdrive. It may be that a band has slipped or something like that. I drove in "gear box fault" for almost 5 months before I had to replace my trans. I got a rebuilt from a shop in AZ for $1,400 plus shipping. The one major surprise I got from the Jag Dealership here is that they charged $66.00/qt for trans fluid and my ZF-24 trans took 9 quarts, (7 for the trans and 2 more for the torque converter).
I hope your problem doesn't require a transplant.

Update: Thank you, I didnt mean pull the tranny, I meant I didnt pull the car out of the garage and go to Autozone to retrieve the code. Anyway, just after the first post, went out to check the tranny, started up the car, no warning, drove for several miles and no warning. I'm betting it will happen again. Any suggestions out there. Shifting fine at the moment, no fluids on the garage floor, no unusual noises or unfamiliar shifting.

Jeff,
Your transmission is a ZF 6HP26, which is known to be a rather robust unit. Many, many cars throughout the world use it. A fault that has gone away is rare, but it does happen. I'd advise having the codes read from the TCM before too long. That way you have something to go on if the fault returns. It could have been something as simple as not getting the shifter fully engaged in drive once, that will put it in default, but cycling the key will clear the fault.
Good luck!

Just a heads up>>>>>>>>> I have a 1999 vdp and I got the gearbox fault light and the limp mode. I had to have it rebuilt. Took it to a trans shop and the replaced all the clutches along with the D drive drum. PLEASE NOTE the zed f transmissions are known for the drive " drums " to crack Possable from the snap ring that holds the drive together. Their is a thicker drum that replaces them. $ 500.00 us. My rebuild was only $ 1,600.00 labor and all. 3 days total job.
