The headliner has dropped down in the rear of our 1996 XJ6 saloon directly over the rear seats. Probably from keeping the rear windows open and the wind buffeted the headliner loose.
Can anyone recommend a good car upholsterer to re-glue the headliner in the eastern CT and R.I. area? Most of the reaserach we read is to replace the whole headliner which seems like over kill since only a small portion has dropped down.
Thanks in advance for your help.

I can't suggest a shop but it's true that the entire headliner will, in all probability, need replacing.
The cloth portion is has separated from the foam backing material...which is still in placeon the ceiling board. Trying to reglue the cloth to the crumbling remants of the foam seldom succesful

Carol,
I have the same problem with my '99 XJR. I also was in hopes that I could re-glue the loose part back but everyone I have spoken to gave me the same advise the Doug gave you. Until you perform proper repair, as one gentleman suggested to me, you can use "jeweler's tacks" or pins. I've never heard of these but apparently they are inconspicuous and will keept the headliner from annoying your rear passengers and perhaps delaly further detaching of the headliner for a time. Just a temporary idea that was shared with me.

You need a new headliner. I live in Connecticut and the only guy I've ever used for any kind of upholstery is Carl's Upholstery in Johnston, Rhode Island, 401-232-5416. I've been a customer of his since the early 1980s and he's great. He gets very busy because he's so good. He did the headliner, seats and carpeting in my 1986 XJ6 and my 1996 headliner has the same problem as yours. He's also done seats, convertible tops, headliners, vinyl roofs, etc., for me over the years. His prices are very reasonable, probably around $200.00 for a headliner but definitely no more than $300.00.
