Remote entry

The remote entry has stopped working on my S-Type and the dealer says I need a new receiving unit which is located in the ceiling and costs over $600.00. I can turn a lot of keys for $600.00. My question is, if I get a receiver unit from the ceiling of a salvaged S-Type can it be programed to work in my car?

I'm sure you have already tried this, but just in case, have you replaced the bty in the key fob, or reprogramed the fob? Dealers don't always try the simple things first........

Yes, dealer checked key fobs and batteries. The problem is definitely in the car and not the fobs.

If it were me I would check the remote personally to make sure the batteries were good and the interior, buttons and membrane, were clean.

Sorry to hear they both quit at the same time. As to your original question, there are techs on other Jag forms who can answer that for you. Try this one.

Which model S-Type are you talking about?? Can you give me the first three of the last six digits of your VIN number, starting with L, M or N? For instance, L65xxx.

Harold,
I'm a little puzzled that you say a dealer wants to replace an item in the roof of the car. The receiving portion of your security/locking system is contained in the driver door module on your car. There is no receiving unit in the roof of US spec cars. Can you provide the part number of the item they say is at fault?
We need to gather some more information. Try this, lock and unlock the car with the key in the door, then immediately try the remote for function. Try the lights button also. Are both remotes totally without function, at ALL TIMES? Are any other locking functions inop, trunk button, fuel door, for instance? Try disconnecting the battery for several minutes, reconnect and then reset the windows. Then retry the remotes.
Cheers,
S Petry

Steven,
I got the part number for the module that the dealer says it needs. It is XR835482.
Originally it was intermittant with not working, worked about 85 or 90 percent of the time. The dealer replaced both remotes. It stilll was working about 85 or 90 percent of the time with the new remotes. Gradually it got where it was working less and less precentage of the time until it quit working all to gether. This time the dealer said it needed the XR835482 module which would be over $600 installed, I think the module itself is about $500.00. None of the functions work by the remote but all work manually with the key or interior buttons. I will appreciate any suggestions.

OK. It's now beginning to make some sense. The part number you gave is in fact the driver door module. Sounds as though there is a range/reception problem between the remote and the module. That's not a common thing, but I have seen it before.
One way you might confirm that is to lower the driver window, get out and try to lock the car with the remote. If it doesn't lock, stick the remote thru the window and hold it 2-3 inches below the interior door handle and press the lock button on the remote. It might work when in there close to the door module. If it works there but not from outside the car, the door module is probably the problem.

I have a slightly different remote question. I recently purchased a new keyless remote for my 2001 XJ and it was reset so that it works fine. I was careful to put the new keyless remote on the same ignition key and reset the memory seat postions.
While the remote does everything it should, the memory seat positions do not automatically take hold when I insert the key with the new remote. My wife's key and oriignal remote were also reset but her memory seat options also do not automatically reposition.
The memory seat works fine when you reset but somehow the key does not seem to link up with the positions when you insert it before driving.
I bought the replacement remote from ikeyless.com, btw, and was pleased with their service.
Any ideas on the memory seat and the key?
Thanks!

My thanks to the ever-reliable Steven Petry. I read a lot of these threads to learn as much as I can and I find you to be a leading authority.
Is the part II you sent from the Owner's Manual, I ask sheepishly?
While I have you, may I ask two other questions?
--- LED lights in the window switches on the right side doors, both front and rear, are out but the switches work to operate the windows just fine. Do I have to replace the entire switch to restore lighting? Could anything else be amiss since both LED failures are on the right side? The driver side switch pack lights and the left rear window switch are on
-- At the very end of braking, when the car is almost to a complete stop, there is often -- but not always -- a high pitched tone that seems to be coming from the front of the car. A complete f/r brake job was done less than 3,000 miles ago. NO rubbing or grinding sound. Just a humm or tone. Any ideas? Recently the ABS warning light has come on, then cleared itself, and come back, then gone again. Could the warning light and the tone be related in some way? I will have the warning light checked this week. I dont now know what code is it feeding back. but I would be curious on your ideas about this brake humm at the end of braking. Most often at low speeds like in a parking lot.
Again, thank you for any advice.

Yes, the second image was just half of the next page in the same Handbook.
The locate lighting in the switches can fail, but it's usually something else. Those two switches share a lighting ground at the base of the RH "A" Post, behind the trim panel. I'd start there, if nothing turns up you'll probably have to get to the switches and check there for power and ground.
On your brake repair, did it get new rotors or were they machined?? If they were machined, I'd suspect a poor cut, either by a dull lathe bit or an unskilled operator. If they were new, I'd look elsewhere, like frt hub bearings or tire tread noise. You could try rotating tires frt to rear and see if that impacts the noise any.
The ABS sounds like the old C1095 Pump Motor Fault. You can search the Forums for ABS Module Repair and find several threads describing the circuit board repair.
Good luck!
Appreciate the kind words, by the way!

Steven,
Many thanks. I will start by checking out the ground behind the A panel.
As for the brakes, they were new rotors and, come to think of it, the noise occurred after I rotated the tires.
Thanks again.

On another illumination question, do the controls on the steeering wheel of the XJ8 2001 light? By controls I mean the cruise controls on the right and the speaker volumne controls on the left?

Too bad. Seemed like a safe feature to have especially for cruise settings. But it is probably difficult to wire.
Thanks, Steven.
