I believe you and she would be much happier in the long run by moving up to a 2003 or later S-Type. The second generation [X202] is more refined, and basically has the running gear of the 2004-2008 XJ model, less the air suspension. Reliability is better, too.

More will chime in......but that's my two cents.

Scot -

I have both a 2000 and a 2001 S-TYPE - both 4.0 V8's. In my mind the V6 is a Ford and the V8 is a Jaguar. 'Nuff said. Both cars have 0ver 110K miles. I have nothing against Fords, having owned Mustangs, T-Birds, Mercurys, and Montegos (351 variety).

I dfrove both the V6 and the V8 before selecting my 2000. The V6 was acceptable but nothing in comparison to the 4.0. There are some known problems more frequently mentioned vith the V8 - notably the timing chain tensioners.

When you get past 100K miles with any car you can expect some problems, but have a good mechanic check it out and enjoy! I bought my 2001 in November '09 and in the next 6 months drove to the Indianapolis AGM and the Western States meet, from which we brought home 3 trophies (Driven Concours, Slalom, and Rallye).

Hello Scott,
I do not know how your wife will be using her car, as well as how much she is into fast cars, but I felt i should write you from a female who LOVES nice cars, but alittle wary of speed. I currently own a S-type 4.2L V8, and I drive it mainly to run errands and to go to occasional lunch/dinner. I love my car (smooth, quiet, no problems, etc) , but it is abit scary for me to drive, particularly the acceleration. Driving around is no problem, except that sometimes when I have to maneuver to avoid something on the street, I unintentionally step on the accelerator just a bit too hard and the car speeds up and go fast suddenly, frightening the you-know-what out of me.

Apart from the "bigger/faster the better" thought about engines, I hope you wont mind my suggestion to perhaps consider how your wife drives, and what she would be comfortable with, as part of your decision making? If she loves to drive cars, then the Stype4.2L V8 is fantastic!

Hope this helps!

Scott,

I have a 2001 Jaguar S Type 4.0 as my daily driver. I like having the extra power of the V-8 and it has been excellent. Currently at 125,000 miles. I use Mobil 5W-30 with good quality oil filters and change the oil every 5,000 miles and air cleaner every other oil change.

Ir runs like a champ!

I would suggest do not get the Supercharged. I have a 2006 S type R which is a great car, and has given me no trouble, but it is far too much for daily driving around town. It also costs a lot more to run, fuel consumption around town is very poor (but good on the highway), huge and expensive brakes, expensive tyres, and is definitely not suitable for winter driving. I mainly only drive mine on longer trips. My previous car was a 2001 Jaguar V 6 which was altogether a much more sensible all weather vehicle and gave a smoother ride.

ditto '03 or later, and a 4.2 imo. Completely different feel between the 4.2 and STR ... apart from cosmetics ... they feel significantly different behind the wheel. Much greater care needed buying an STR. Cheers.
