Hi,
I have a 1994 XJS 2+2 with coach stripes. At the last concours I was told that the stripes are not original and I lost some points ( not a big deal, I don't compete nationally). I have done a bit of research and found many conflicting pages in the documentation (parts manual, concours judging manual, sales brochure, etc) Can anyone resolve my curiosity. Don't worry I'm not going to contest my score and create turbulence. Thanks Steve

Steve all XJ-S or XJS are not created equal! Easiest way to determine the question is to look at the parts manual for your car (year and possibly vin exact) and find the part number for the stripes. No part number means no stripes. There were bulletins issued in the 80s when the part numbers were left out but not lately if I recal correctly. There is a paper Dick Cavicke has that spells out the XJ-S per year and model. If he does not chime in I will look for my copy.

Steve,
As George mentioned, all Jaguar factory-supplied coach stripes had part numbers because they were made of tape, in specific widths, combinations and colors. They were fastened/pasted on to the body, vice painted. An immediate clue is that, if your coach stripes are painted on, they are not authentic.

Our best information on XJS coach stripes indicates that they were present from 1987 to 1990 but NOT present on the 1991 to 1993 models. In 1994, they were only found on the 6 cylinder models, NOT the 12 and, in 1995 and 1996, they were gone again.

JCRC is always open to documented corrections.

Dick

Isn't that backwards?
The 1994 V12 cars had coach lines.
None had painted on pinstripes.
Steve are they located at mid fender? Or at the top?

Dan,
My apologies, I read my chart wrong and I appreciate your catching the error. Here's another try:

1991 through 1993, neither the 6 nor 12 cylinder XJS's had pin stripes.

In 1994, ONLY the 12 cylinder XJS's had pin stripes.

Thereafter (1995-1996), NO XJS's had pin stripes.

TBOMK the remainder of my earlier post was correct.

Hi,
My research(found a part number in the parts manual) showed that it was only the 6 cyl. that had it taped on at the factory. It is mid fender just at the crease. Don't forget that many dealers offered as a dealer installed option. This all based on my research. Who know what really happened?

Steve,
We make every attempt to document these elusive features.

I would greatly appreciate your providing the pin stripe Part Numbers and the specific Parts Manual in which you found the information relating to your 1994 6cyl XJS.

We are well aware that dealers did many things to enhance the saleability of their cars; however, under the JCNA rules, only those accessories, extras or options authorized by Jaguar Cars Ltd. or Jaguar Cars USA for the specific year-model are accepted as authentic.

Thanks for your help and interest,
Dick

Dick,
It's in the CD Parts Microfiche RTC9910FN XJS 1991 TO 1996. page d16 fiche 7.
The Part #'s are BEC18174(5,6,7,8)FDL. If you want a picture of the page send me an email.
Hope this helps, your input is greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Steve

Dick et al,

1991 XJ-S's include both pre-facelift and facelift models. Is it not more likely that the pin stripes were dropped mid-year when the 1991 facelift model was introduced? This makes a lot more sense to me than the deletion of a long term item during a model run.

If this were the case, 1991 pre-facelift models had pin stripes, but not the 1991 facelifts.

I have no sources to justify this thought, it just seems more reasonable to me.

Hi Stephen,
It was my understanding that all convertibles models followed the later coupe models in that they all had thin multi-coloured swage coachlines, that is up to 1991.
The Rouge model introduced in 1989 had a gold coach line on signal red, the Le-Mans XJS, only available in Europe in 1990 had twin gold coachlines.
I have not found any documentation that states the coach lines were standard from Jaguar on any face lift model from 1991-1996.
Just my two eggs and a ham sandwich hope this helps

Gentlemen,
Regarding XJS Coach Lines/Pin Stripes, in particular, on the 1994 models.

Thorough research by Geoffrey Green (author of the JCNA XJS Pre-Facelift Judging Guide) of original Jaguar Parts Listings, Sales brochures and press releases, reveals the following Pin Stripe/Coach Line configurations for US delivered XJS's:

1976 - 1986 NO
1987 thru 1990 (+H&E) YES
1991 thru 1993, All NO
1994 XJS, 6 cyl. NO
1994 XJS, 12 cyl. YES (from VIN # 188105 to 194774)
1995 -1996 XJS NO (from VIN # 194775)

Note: All Jaguar factory-applied Pin Stripes were taped-on (not painted) and had individual Part Numbers according to their color and car model.

Some confusion has resulted from apparent license/short cuts taken by the contractors, who transcribed and published the latest online XJS computer, microfiche and other parts listings. In those documents, some items (such as the Coachline Tapes) have been administratively grandfathered-in to model-years for which the items were not originally applicable.

Geoff Green is working on a JCNA Judging Guide for the Face-Lift XJS and, if his ongoing research, or that of any respondent, finds original documentation contrary to the above, it will be considered for the new guide.

Meanwhile, "The play on the field stands as called." ;-)

Thanks for your interest and help.
