2003 XJR (X308) illumination of Cruise Control & Sport buttons

Hi, all:

I got hit last week by a skateboarder when he took a corner too fast in downtown Deadwood. I saw his life pass before my eyes as he face-firsted it into the side of my Jaguar. He's fine, but it cost $1200 to remove the impression of his nose and forehead from the driver's (LH) rear door. Once he saw the damage, he ran away.

I paid a $300 deductible, but eyewitnesses saved the day; there will be no premium increase for this 'collision' which really is what they call it. I used my phone to take his picture before he fled, so take that Gen Y, and curiously, neither the police or the insurance corp. wanted it -- just too minor a blip on the crowded landscape of lawlessness.

So now I have a picture of this rather ugly guy in my phone. I say this just in case of accident, and as people go through my effects, and look at my phone, they see this picture of a dubious-looking ugly guy, and wonder if I had some kind of a secret life worth looking into. Nope, just another character from downtown Deadwood.

The car is back, and looks great, and after cleaning it thoroughly last evening to get the body-shop dust off and out of it, I sat in the car at dusk, and started it up.

And that's when I had one of those "I wish I'd paid more attention earlier" moments. When it's dark out, and the interior dash/window switch/transmission shifter lights are on, I noticed that the button for the speedometer graphic on the Cruise Control button is illuminated. The "S" on the Sport mode button isn't. But the red lights come on for both when they're in the on position; both are working fine. The lights illuminating the J-gate positions are working.

Should the "S" on the Sport-mode button be illuminated in the same fashion as the speedometer image on the Cruise Control button when the interior console/function lights are on? For the life of me, I can't remember.

And if it should be illuminated in the same fashion as the speedometer image on the Cruise Control button, does anyone have instructions for replacing the bulb? Or should that be left to the dealer?

Assistance kindly appreciated. Skateboarders not so much.

Adam-hello from Florida.
I have a 05 L and the lights your speaking of (S) come on (in my car) only when activated.
If they were lit all the time, you couldn't tell if the funtion was on or not. I may be wrong, but at least from the indication in my car, I believe your good to go.

Seems to me the guys nose imprint on the door didn't hurt a thing---other then maybe his manhood. :-)

Hello Adam:

I have a 2000 VDP and the cruise control and sport shift switches do have a separate light for the dial and "S" respectively. They are pale green and are turned on with the dashboard lights. The "red dot" illumination tells you when either or both switched are activated. Incidentally, the illumination lights are built into the switch itself, and there are no replacement bulbs available that I know of. Both of my bulbs have burned out and I haven't considered it worth the cost of new switches just to have them illuminated.
I know, I want everything to work and work right now, but there is a cost benefit question. Does this bulb effect the efficient operation of the car ????

Dear Garfield:

Thank you for taking the time to write.

Not being at all familiar with the later cars, I suspect there are differences between the x308 and your x350; in my 2003, the indication that either Cruise or Sport are active, or on, or engaged, comes from a small, but bright, red light above the button towards the shifter; this light is visible day and night -- so long as Cruise or Sport is engaged -- irrespective of whether the dashboard/function lights are on.

I still harbour a suspicion, therefore, that the bulb that illuminates the Sport button (so you can see the button to make the feature active or inactive at night) has burned out. It just seems odd that the Cruise button's speedometer graphic is illuminated and the Sport button's "S" isn't.

Let's see if others weigh in on this one.

Thank you again for taking the time to help.

Adam

Dear Frank and Garfield:

Well, I responded while Frank's response was arriving, and Frank, you've got the answer.

Thank you Frank, I thought that was the case; that both should be illuminated.

Now, knowing that, is it a plug-and-play swap that I could do, if I had a spare, or is it sufficiently complex or risky that it requires dealer or expert involvement?

Adam:

Both of the switches are separate "plug-ins" that are accessed by removing the small oval tab that surrounds the switches. Like I said before, I haven't considered changing the switches because the lights don't effect the operation of the switch. If it did, I would have changed them out long ago, but with my "Big Kitty" 11 years old now, I have to look at putting my dollars where they will do the most good.
(I am recovering from a recent timing chain tensioner break, so I hope you understand.)

Dear Frank and Garfield:

Again, thank you both for taking the time to consider my situation.

After doing some Internet research, I found the following about the switch in question, which allows one to switch between Normal and Sport modes:

Jaguar Part Name: "Switch - Performance Mode.
Jaguar Part Number: LNC6220AA -- I believe this one is for 1998-2003 XJ8s.
Jaguar Part Number: LNC6220BB -- This is the correct one for my 2003 XJR.

I ordered the part from my Jaguar dealer yesterday afternoon, and it arrived this morning from Toronto. I paid $67.20, taxes included.

Sitting in the car, with the key on a small hand towel on the passenger seat I did the following:

1. I placed two fingers at the lower edge of the gearshift surround right at the the veneer (where there is a slight indentation in the gear shift surround), at the 12:00 o'clock position, i.e., near the radio.

2. I gently lifted the gearshift surround, and as it separated from the veneer, I grasped both sides of the surround at the 9 and 3 positions and with gentle tugging, lifted the unit free from the veneer.

3. With the gear shift surround separated from the veneer, I was able to see how the surround for the Cruise and the Performance Mode switches separated from the gear shift surround (Frank, you had suggested the time-saving route of starting with this surround, but I was unsure how to separate it, so I started with the bigger surround; in future, if required, I'll start with the one you suggested as it really is just a lift and pull), and gently pulled the Cruise and Performance switch surround out of the gear shift surround, placing the gear shift surround and the Cruise and Performance switch surround on the towel on the passenger seat

4. Using my forefinger and thumb, I gently separated the tabs which hold the Performance Mode Switch in place in the console, and pulled it free from the black plastic receptacle which holds it.

5. Grasping the multiplug and the Performance Mode Switch, I separated the two, careful not to let the multiplug wire drop down into the transmission tunnel.

6. I took the new Performance Mode Switch and slid it home into the multiplug.

7. I gently placed the new Performance Mode Switch into its receptacle, and between gentle pressure and the use of forefinger and thumb to pull apart and position the tabs, I saw and heard it 'snap' into place on the leading edge and the back edge.

8. I then took the gear shift surround from the towel on the passenger seat and slopped it over the gear shift knob and aligned it with its cut-out in the veneer. Applying gentle pressure at various positions, it snugged flat to the veneer.

9. I then took the Cruise and Performance switch surround, aligned it with its opening and the holes into which its prongs fit, and gently pressed it home, shifting it as required to facilitate proper alignment with the holes and the two switches.

10. I then retrieved the keys, started the car, turned on the lights and, because it was sunny outside, draped the hand towel over the two switches, and peeking under a lifted edge, determined that the Cruise Control Switch speedometer graphic and the "S" in the Performance Mode switch were both illuminated. Much self-congratulation ensued.

11. I have since test-driven the car and can confirm that both Sport and Normal modes continue to work.

Not bad, all in all, and as I sit here touching wood, i.e., my head and my desk, all on my 2003 XJR-R1 is again working as it should.

Congratulations on your achievement! Considering the fact that my local dealership charges $114.00 per shop(book) hour, consider the money you saved, plus the satisfaction of doing it yourself.
You have a beautiful Jag, and I hope it gives you years of pleasure.

Adam,
I painstakingly read your description of your repair, switch replacement, all in great suspense at the expectation of a disaster about to be reported. But not to be! Phew! Nicely done. I've been having problems with my switches too. I have a 1999 XJR so your post leaves me wondering weather the 1998-2003 XJ8 or the 2003 XJR switch would be the correct one for me. I would guess the former, but would that guess end up costing me $67.20? (please share the name of your supplier)
My problem is not with the illumination of the switches. They both illuminate when depressed. But my cruise control does not work. And I don't know how to tell if sport mode is engaged. The light coming on should suggest that it's active but I don't sense it while driving. Any suggestions now that you are experienced in this area?
Bye the way, your car looks beautiful in the pic (I love those wheels. I have the same on my '99). Is that an aftermarket grill or the original for a 2003. My 1999 has the veritcal bar type grill. I have purchased a mesh grill but have yet to (attempt to) install it.

Dear Jay:

Let me see if I can help:

1. “I’ve been having problems with my switches too. I have a 1999 XJR so your post leaves me wondering weather the 1998-2003 XJ8 or the 2003 XJR switch would be the correct one for me. I would guess the former, but would that guess end up costing me $67.20? (please share the name of your supplier).”

I’m not an expert in these matters, so when I called the dealer, I confirmed that the “Switch – Performance Mode LNC6220BB” was the correct one for my 2003 model year. I suspect that it’s the same switch for all the V8 XJRs, but I would want to call me dealer and confirm, first. I would recommend against using LNC6220AA until you’ve made this confirmation.

2. “My problem is not with the illumination of the switches. They both illuminate when depressed. But my cruise control does not work. And I don't know how to tell if sport mode is engaged. The light coming on should suggest that it's active but I don't sense it while driving. Any suggestions now that you are experienced in this area?”

Jay, we both need to understand that I am an idiot, often. Sometimes, I’m a lucky idiot, i.e., yesterday when I managed to replace the Performance Mode Switch and still have a working car that wasn’t on fire when all was said and done. Against this backdrop, I am loathe to suggest, “Just go out and buy a new Cruise Control Switch, install it, and see if Cruise now works.” I’m a ‘check to see if there’s a fuse, then check the fuse’ kinda guy. Beyond this level of skill, I usually take the car to the dealer.

How do I know Performance Mode is engaged – beyond seeing the red light that tells me that it is? Well, the car feels like it’s in a lower gear. And I can hear that the transmission is just slightly noisier, especially on the run up to a gear change. I know, I know, somewhere there’s a Jaguar engineer who invented the whole Performance Mode deal asking, “For this mope, I got an advanced degree in engineering?” Anyway, you asked, and that’s how I tell Performance Mode is engaged (beyond the red light that tells me that it is).

3. “Is that an aftermarket grill or the original for a 2003. My 1999 has the vertical bar type grill.”

My car came with this grill. If that’s a picture of your car attached to your post, I can’t see that there’s a significant difference, although I’m unable to enlarge the picture.

4. “By the way, your car looks beautiful in the pic (I love those wheels. I have the same on my '99).”

Well thank you! I love those BBS Milan rims, too, and found a supplier in the UK for the stainless bands, which can be so easily curbed and damaged: www.sbwheels.co.uk.

And if that is indeed a picture of your car, you’ve a lovely one, too!
