Andrew Whyte Service Award 2003
Committee Chaired by Brock McPherson
It is my pleasure to present the 2003 Andrew
Whyte Service Award. This award is given annually and it is the 13th year
it has been awarded. The award recognizes JCNA members whose service to
a JCNA affiliate group or region best exemplifies Andrew Whyte's personal
philosophy: The spirit of positive action, the promotion of mutual goodwill
amongst clubs and the willingness and ability to assist any Jaguar enthusiast
whenever possible. Recipients have been nominated by their fellow members
for their generous contributions, which have been invaluable to JCNA and
its membership.
This year's recipient was nominated by
fellow members and the local club.
Although the recipient was paid both by
Jaguar Cars and the Jaguar Journal, the recipient performed duties with
the interests of JCNA constantly in mind. The recipient was instrumental
in setting up the Jaguar North American Archives, and was their official
Archivist. The recipient rescued and catalogued thousands of photographs,
documents, and brochures during Jaguar's move to their new headquarters
in 1990. Under the recipient's direction, the Archives maintained a library
and photo file and provides answers to technical and other questions.
The North American Archives is also the source for Jaguar data certificates,
which authenticate the original build record of every Jaguar made.
The recipient controlled the Jaguar Journal
inventory, researched, and wrote on the Technical Seminars given at the
AGM and gave information and guidance to the club members based on the
recipient's extensive experience in JCNA, including the JCNA Membership
Study Committee. Maintained the JCNA Events Schedule for the Jaguar Journal
and monitored all club events to ensure results are received and event
stories obtained whenever possible.
The recipient was co-author with Tom Hendricks
of JCNA's first concours rulebook, which we still use in a modified form.
The recipient had been involved in some way in the preparation of every
new edition of the Concours Rulebook. The recipient actively supported
the creation of the JCNA Rally Program.
The recipient chaired the Concours Committee
for several years in the time period when the committee was JCNA's only
official body. The recipient was involved in many administrative and concours
event matters. The recipient continued as a member when the committee
became the National Administrative Committee taking on more responsibility
at a time when Jaguar sales made it necessary for the company to curtail
its administrative support of the Business Committee.
The recipient was, not only a source of
information and encouragement; but also, was always willing to help JCNA
and its members. The recipient was the ultimate Volunteer.
Has anyone guessed who it is yet? The 2003
recipient is none other than Karen Miller. Receiving the award is Mike
Cook on behalf of the Miller family.

Jaguar Dealer of the
Year 2003
Committee Chaired by Brock McPherson
It is my pleasure to present the 2003 Jaguar
Dealer of the Year Award. A primary goal of JCNA is to foster a spirit
of cooperation and friendship between Jaguar franchised dealers and JCNA
affiliated clubs. This award is presented annually by JCNA to the Jaguar
dealership which does the most to achieve that goal by working closely
with a JCNA affiliate and its individual members in organizing and participating
in mutually beneficial activities.
This year's recipient was chosen for its
substantial support to its local club. The Dealer is personally active
in the club activities, not just a representative from the staff. Plus,
his wife is a jaguar driver and member of the club, and participates regularly.
At the 2003 concours, the dealership bought
and paid for the band, the coke wagon, the barbecued hamburgers and hot
dogs, underwrote the expense of the concours t-shirts, and half the expense
of the club's polo shirts. The awards dinner was also supported by the
dealership "buying" several dinners for the staff so the club
would meet the minimum number requirements of the hotel. The dealership
also pitched in for rooms at the hotel for the same reason.
During the club's October Dealer Support
Day, the members were invited to test drive any of the jaguars on the
lot, turned out the favorite was a new red convertible XKR.
The dealership provides a club room in
one of the buildings for the club's use. The room is air-conditioned,
has a sink and coffee bar, and a bathroom facility. It has tables and
chairs sufficient for club business meetings and other activities.
Nominating this year's recipient was Central
Oklahoma Jaguar Association who is very proud of its local dealer and
this year's recipient. Please give JAGUAR OF OKLAHOMA CITY from Oklahoma
City, Oklahoma a big hand. Receiving the award is Steve Houtari on behalf
of Jaguar of Oklahoma City.

Notes: Most of the judges simply read the e-mailed
and online copies of the entries and sent me back their choices. But there
were a few comments, and it was obvious they were very tough this year.
A couple said that if there were mispellings or poor grammar, they discarded
the entry. One tossed an article because the brand name (Holley) of a
car part was misspelled -- I wouldnt even have known that.
In the pre-event category, the judges preferred short,
advertisement-type announcements. It was that way last year too, but I
thought then it was a coincidence. I was wrong.
I did not do any of the judging myself unless you want
to count the first round. Since many newsletter editors simply sent all
their issues and asked me to choose, I read an awful lot of newsletters.
Although it was exhausting and time-consuming, Im glad I did. I
learned a lot -- especially about how to run a club and keep it exciting
and interesting. But (as one of the judges said) I wasnt fit to
judge by that time: I liked them all and made "excuses" for
misspellings, etc.
This years books are being mailed to winners in
care of their editors. They are the same size as last year, with leather
covers -- green with gold and silver lettering.
