Notes: Most of the judges simply read the e-mailed and online copies of the entries and sent me back their choices. But there were a few comments, and it was obvious they were very tough this year. A couple said that if there were mispellings or poor grammar, they discarded the entry. One tossed an article because the brand name (Holley) of a car part was misspelled -- I wouldn’t even have known that.

In the pre-event category, the judges preferred short, advertisement-type announcements. It was that way last year too, but I thought then it was a coincidence. I was wrong.

I did not do any of the judging myself unless you want to count the first round. Since many newsletter editors simply sent all their issues and asked me to choose, I read an awful lot of newsletters. Although it was exhausting and time-consuming, I’m glad I did. I learned a lot -- especially about how to run a club and keep it exciting and interesting. But (as one of the judges said) I wasn’t fit to judge by that time: I liked them all and made "excuses" for misspellings, etc.

This year’s books are being mailed to winners in care of their editors. They are the same size as last year, with leather covers -- green with gold and silver lettering.
