The XJ220 in Detail: Engine and Rear Compartment
|
(Click here to Return First Page)
This is a photo of the XJ220 engine compartment, showing the overall layout. This is a mid engine car, the engine compartment is accessed by lifting the rear window. Note that a glass divider separates this area from the cockpit: the driver and passenger seats are visible in the photo. This engine is a twin turbo V6, with a five speed transaxle. The aircraft-inspired fuel filler leads to a racing style fuel cell.
Looking towards the rear, the transaxle is just visible below the engine. Note the heat shields on the cross-brace, these have been installed to protect the paint from the heat of the US-installed catalytic converters. The rear sway bar is visible in this picture, as are a couple of the shock absorber mounts. There are four rear shocks, similar in concept to an E-type rear axle. Most of the suspension is mounted inboard to prevent interference with the ground effects system, with the shocks mounted horizontally.

The boot behind the boot. Behind the engine compartment is a small storage space. It's enough to hold a briefcase or a very small suit bag. It also holds the CD changer and a tool kit.
