Toyota because the Japanese automotive giant is rumoured to have the largest budget in F1 yet on their third season they are still solidly glued to the back of the grid. They were the only team beaten by Jaguar this week end, with 2001 CART champ Christiano Da Mata finishing 13th and last; Toyota is the only constructor backed team with no points so far this season... Both McLaren Mercedes drivers managed to stay ahead of Mark Webber's
Jaguar at the checkered flag in Barcelona, although not by much, but considering
where they come from their downfall is just incredible. From title contender So thankfully for Jaguar, these two teams are helping attracting attention away from the R5 poor performances so far this season. Unfortunately for Jaguar, the wake up call will come fairly soon. We are fast approaching the beginning of the silly season, that time of the yearwhere drivers start looking at their options for the next year. This year, some choice seats are available including at least one, and possibly two openings at Williams BMW with Montoya already signed up at McLaren and Ralf Schumacher falling out of grace with his team bosses. One of the drivers rumoured to be on Frank Williams' short list is none other than Mark Webber whose patience must be running out with Jaguar. Needless to say, if Webber is to leave Jaguar next season, it will not be easy to find a talented replacement and things are likely to be all downhill from there... Meanwhile, at the sharper end of the grid it was business as usual with another dominant drive by six times world Champion Michael Schumacher leading his team mate to another Ferrari 1 -2 and reaching new milestones in the process. 200th GP start, 75th win, 59th pole position and best season start with 5 straight wins equalling Nigel Mansel's record set in 1991. He can also claim the title of luckiest driver having driven 3 quarters of the race with a broken exhaust header yet controlling the pace and finishing comfortably ahead. It was yet another display of Ferrari reliability as his last mechanical DNF goes back to the German GP of 2001. This week end, the Ferrari opposition was lead by Renault, with Italian
Jarno Trulli holding off his team mate and local hero Fernando Alonso
to a 3 - 4 finish for the French team. Despite all the hype, BAR Honda's
Jenson Button failed to threaten the Ferrari domination with a costly
error in qualifying locking him up mid pack. The much anticipated duel
between Schumacher and Montoya never materialised, the Colombian was a
little slow off the front row and slowly faded back with brake problems.
His team Next up, in two weeks: Monaco. Jaguar did score a podium there with Eddie
Irvine in 2001.
