The Costin Lister Jaguar Boot Area
By Michael Frank

Home   News Archive Index

Seen here in both old and new photographs, the boot area of the Costin Lister is very unusual. As with many vintage racers, it was built to carry a spare tire. For races like Le Mans, where the car had to have a certain amount of cargo capacity to qualify, this area was sized to fit simulated luggage. Battery is located on the extreme right corner. The large fuel tank is mounted in an unusually high location. This concentrated the weight of the fuel on the drive wheels. It was also felt that the tall construction would dampen the effects of cross drafts without the need for the high drag of a fin. The body panels are designed to be easily removable. Undoing a few fasteners will allow the entire shell to be removed in a minutes. These bodies were made for Lister by Williams & Pritchard.

The differential is a Salisbury Power Lock,  a ZF differential was an available option. Many axle ratios were available, this car is believed to be equipped with a 3.73:1, giving a 0-60 time of just over 4 seconds. Inboard Dunlop disk brakes were a cooling problem, as they were to be on the E-Type.

The rear suspension is a semi independent De Dion design. Coil-over shock and axle half shaft are visible in this photo. The differential is mounted slightly to the left of center, to allow more room for the driver. This necessitated unequal length half-shafts. The large fiber tube on the upper right is part of an improved brake cooling system, fitted for modern vintage racing.
