The Costin Lister Jaguar Suspension in Detail
By Michael Frank

Home   News Archive Index

The frame of the Costin is a tubular space frame. Body panels were literally hung from the frame, by loosening a few fasteners, all major body panels could be removed in a few minutes. Independent front suspension with dual wishbones, sway bar, and rack and pinion steering. Coil over shocks front and rear. Rear suspension was a De Dion semi independent design, with a sliding center link. Unequal length rear half shafts were used to allow the drive train to be displaced to the left for driver comfort. Dunlop disk brakes, inboard at rear. Dunlop alloy wheels (D-Type pattern), with 6.00L16 Dunlop racing tires (Firestones on US deliveries).

The Lister's front suspension used several components from Morris Oxfords. These proved to be too weak for the heavy loads imposed by racing. After kingpin failures were noted (left), the factory began using reinforced components for the uprights and wishbones (right). An advisory was sent to all Lister owners, describing the required modifications in detail. This letter impressed Briggs Cunningham, who did not expect such diligence from a small manufacturer.
