At the starting line you will be given a set of Route Instructions. Examine your set and make sure you have all the pages and that they are legible.

Route Instructions (Rls) contain line by line direction instructions that mayor may not be accompanied (on the same line) with mileage information and/or average rate of speed instructions.

PLEASE SEE THE EXAMPLE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE.

It is generally accepted rally practice that you must complete the action of one route instruction in full before going on to the next. The navigator should read ahead as far as possible, and read aloud to the driver one or two route instructions ahead --but not too many, or you may confuse the driver. The RIs will also contain information relative to zeroing watches or odometers at certain points, as well as restart times after lunch breaks or stopovers. THE NAVIGATOR MUST READ EVERYTHING, LINE BY LINE! AND, DON'T GET LOST!!

As we stated in the Chapter 2 definitions, there is a universally accepted rally rule that you follow the road that you were previously instructed to be on until another instruction directs you onto another road. APPLYING THIS RULE WILL KEEP YOU ON COURSE. This can be demonstrated using the example (below) of RIs:

At 4.90 miles you were instructed to make an Acute Right Turn onto Richmond Rd. Actually, Richmond Road, for part of its length, is State Highway #3. Somewhere before the instruction at mileage 10.60 the road forks in three directions, with Richmond Road bearing left, State Highway #3 bearing right, and a road with no signpost going straight. There is no route instruction to tell you which way to go.

To deduce the correct route, you must refer to the language of the route instruction that got you on this road in the first place. As it read, "AR onto Richmond Rd. " , you should bear left so as to stay on Richmond Road. If it had read, "AR onto State Highway #3" , you should bear right to follow the numbered road. If it had simply read at 4.90 miles, "AR" , you were not "put on" either Richmond Road OR State Highway #3; therefore you should continue straight ahead onto the road with no signpost. This type of deduction is referred to as the "Straight Ahead Rule'.
