Happy 90th Birthday Norman

Norman Dewis: One of the great Jaguar characters
who worked for Sir William Lyons.
Norman
was Jaguars chief test development engineer from 1952 to 1985,
but his career in the motor industry started way back in 1934 at Humber,
although he soon transferred to Armstrong Siddeley where he worked
until war broke out.
After serving in the RAF during the war, flying in Blenheims, he joined the specialist car manufacturer Lea-Francis and eventually became their chief tester, before moving to Jaguar in January 1952. One of the tasks which his new boss William Heynes, Jaguars chief engineer, charged him with was to further develop the C-type Le Mans car, and also the new Dunlop disc brake a brand new invention of worldwide significance and which helped Jaguar win Le Mans in 1953, 1955, 1956 and 1957.
Testing the new brake also involved Norman accompanying Stirling Moss in a C-type on the 1952 Mille Miglia, that amazing 1,000-mile race round Italy (after various adventures, they retired near the end, but were on course for second or third place).
He then went on to play a key role in the development of the 190mph D-type, and drove for the works team in the tragic 1955 Le Mans, witnessing the terrible accident which marred the race. Later that year he teamed up with Bob Berry to drive Jack Broadheads D-type (OKV 2) in the Goodwood Nine Hours race, coming fifth.
Apart from race-car testing, Norman was also responsible for testing and signing-off all Jaguars road cars including the XK 140/150, Mk VII series, Mk 1 and Mk 2, Mk X, XJ6/12 and XJ-S plus, most notably, the E-type of 1961 and all subsequent versions of this great sports car. His last brush with competition cars involved the 5.0 litre V12 mid-engined XJ13, Jaguars still-born Le Mans car of the late 1960s which he famously crashed at a three-figure speed in 1971. The last production Jaguar he was associated with was XJ40, the new XJ6 launched the year after his retirement in 1985.
In more recent years and despite now being almost 90, Norman has travelled the world as a sort of unofficial roving ambassador for Jaguar, enthralling enthusiasts in such as Australia, New Zealand, North America and many European countries.

Happy Birthday and thank you for your contributions to Jaguar and the excitement it's created for many of us. My father who grew up in Detroit Mich drove nothing but Jaguars (XKE's)his entire life winter and summer. My brothers and I got the bug and have now spent our entire lifes collecting and driving the old XK's and XKE's. I currently own a 1954 XK120 SE, a 61 XKE, and an XK8 that is my daily driver. I wish you many more fun and healthy years. Gene Berghoff |

Norman, Happy birthday. I am a happy owner of a 1968 E-Type OTS Series 1.5. I have owned many cars but the style, performance and intergrity of my E-Type has not been matched by any of my other vehicles. This weekend a stranger commented that the car is so beautiful, it should be illegal. Many more happy birthdays! David Reilly |

Have a GREAT 90th!!! I am the Ex GI photographer who took movies of you at the 55 LeMans. I was there with Tony Parravano and I have 10000 feet of B/W 16mm film of the race. I had one of the rare all course press passes John Baus gave out, so I have some never shown shots taken before and after the Mercedes disaster. I was on top of the Ferrari pits when it happened and had it on film.. I am in my 80's but I still drive Jags..a 140 OTS and a 95 XJS 6.0 coupe. Had my first one in the'40s.. an alloy 120 OTS..should have kept it... Sam Dibitonto |

Happy Birthday Norman! My Mother has given me some of your details and we would like to contact you. My late Father was your cousin Peter Swanston, his mother was Mabel Swanston nee Dewis who died when Dad was only a week old. We only have 2 photographs of Mabel and wondered if you or any family members have any more. I have great memories of Uncle Fred, Auntie Cis, Uncle Arthur and Auntie Pop staying with us at Dad's farm in Devon. Sadly Dad died in 1999 following a minor accident. Norman: Congratulations on yet another milestone. What a wonderful life in the automotive world and what a way to retire into the "arms" of so many friends and associates. Your visit to the Saratoga Automobile Museum in 2008 was treasured by all of us. But especially by my grandson, James III, whom you met then. He especially asked my to send his personal greetings. Hopefully we will cross paths again. I am sorry that i will not make the XK Club Celebration in London in November. But that should be special as well. Warmest personal regards and best wishes. Happy Birthday Greetings from Chattanooga, Tennessee. We 1st met you in Franklin, TN at the Jaguar meet. We had just arrived at the hotel and were fairly new to Jaguar collectors (now 5). You provided directions for registration and were most gracious. It was only when you were introduced at the banquet that we realized who you were and your importance to Jaguar. It was a privilege to have met you. We wish you many more years driving Jaguars. Barbara & Jim Barbara & Jim Harris |

Norman, Congratulations on your 90th birthday - hard to believe when seeing you around at so many events. You are an absolute inspiration to us Jaguar lovers. Every time when on route to our annual touring holiday (in an XK8) to the Bavarian/Austrian/Swiss Alps, when we pass Jabbeke I remind my wife of your famous record-breaking run in the XK120, and she keeps telling me: "YESSS I know it was a fellow called Norman Dewis". All the best and many happy returns. Hope to see you again soon before you'll forget some of your great stories - but then, I somehow think you won't. Karl Schleich (JEC and XKEC member). Dear Norman: I write a monthly column in the E-type and XK club magazines, mainly about people and their cars from North America. I cant tell you how many people I have met that have talked about you, seeing you at various events, and how friendly you always are. I hope I will get the chance to meet you one day, perhaps if you visit Pebble Beach again. Best wishes for a very happy birthday from everyone in the USA! Paul McNabb Paul McNabb |

Hi Norman This is just to say happy birthday, from all the CKL family and company. It was great to see you at Le Mans last month, and it was a priviage to be running E2A, still very much as you set it up 50 years ago. Against a lot of supposed "historic" cars that in fact incorporate quite a bit of current technology, good old E2A came in a creditable 6th place. Well done that man! Looking forward to seeing you soon. Chris Keith-Lucas Chris Keith-Lucas |

Hi Norman, One of the greatest pleasures I have had in recent years is going with you to JEC talks and chatting away in the car and then watching you entrance the audience. The fact that you are still doing this in your 90th year is truly amazing. Enjoy Pebble Beach, we will be thinking of you! Best wishes Graham Searle |

Dear Norman, Our warmest congratulations on your 90th birthday, all the very best wishes, good luck, good health and most of all: be in the future as you were in the past and as you are today. For us who have known you for quite a few years it is simply wonderful to know that you are in such good health, that you are going as strong as always, driving fast motorcars on fast tracks and at the same time being as sharp and perceptive an observer on all that is Jaguar. Over all these years you have fearlessly held up the flag for Jaguar. You have been close to Sir William most personally, you are one of those very few who would recognize how he would react to any of the occurrences of today in the motor world in general and Jaguar in particular. Still to this day you have the touch and feel for the company in your blood. We are proud of you and we are proud to know you, to listen to you, to laugh with you and to appreciate what you have to say about the company and the cars we love. You are the stalwart of Jaguar, courageously defending the view of a very unique company, of a make that still today lives in the great spirit of unparalleled success on the race tracks around the world. I so very much wanted to shake your hand out of respect for your accomplishments Instead I purchased your book from Terry Larson by recommendation of Steve Kennedy and Paul Skilleter books. You are one of the automotive icons of the 20th century. A genius and I hear a gracious man. enjoy your special day I know many people are honoring you at this event. I am sad I could not join them. To Uncle Norman - from Don, Justin, Lesley and Shareen. Just to say how much we have enjoyed your company, sense of humour and boundless energy over the years. I turn 58 this year and i haven't got half the stamina of you or Stirling. Perhaps my bestest memory story was you asking me if you could sit next to me in the Jaguar MK9 a few years ago, to do 3 laps around Le Mans. As we went into Arnage a very young Justin Law came flying down the inside to take the corner in his Jaguar MK2. You said "look at that *uckin' Mark two on its door 'andles". I still have a good laugh every time i think about it. You are an icon but you are still a down to earth petrol head like the rest of us. Best wishes and love from us all. Happy Birthday |

Happy Birthday & Good Health I enjoyed your visit to the JCNA meeting in Pittsburgh, PA, USA in 2007. It was a joy. Thank you for humor, civility, and always being welcoming. These traits may be part of why you have a huge fan base. Warmest wishes..Peter 1962 e-type & 1957 3.4 (MK 1) Peter Daniel |

Dear Norman Have a very happy birthday. The way you live your life and enjoy every minute is an inspiration to those of us surprised to find ourselves on the wrong side of 21! Dear Norman, I am one of the founders of the "Going to the Sun Rally" here is Montana. Your impact has been felt here in the "wild west". Many Jaguars have come on the Rally and they are some of the most dependable cars. They have helped us raise over $300,000 for charity. Your early testing helped Jaguar become a famous brand that is still impacting motor events today. Happy birthday from all of us at the goingtothesunrally.com Farnum Alston Farnum Alston |

Dear, Mr. Dewis: I express my gratitude to you on your 80th birthday.. More than that your accomplishments with Jaguar and the people you touched. I say nothing you have not heard before. I was talking with Steve Kennedy about ordering some books on Jaguar and your name came up. I understand you may be visiting Terry Larson in Mesa Arizona? It would be a a tremendous honor to meet with you and terry. I just ordered your book and look forward to reading it. I also have the orginal copy of the The most famous car in the world. the Story of HP 9600. I originally got this for my friend who owns a series one 1964 XKE coupe. After reading it I decided to get a copy for my self. I would be honored if you sign this book for me. Your accomplishments say much about you more than can be put into words. I have never had the opportunity to see the Le mans cars you created. I am reading a book on Mike Hawthorn from Paul Skilleret books in England doing research for an article. So all I can say at this time is happy birthday and hope we can meet one day. Sincerely Bob Geco Long Beach, California USA krwaxnz@yahoo.com Robert Geco |

Dear Norman, Many congratulations, my old friend, and when I say 'old' I am referring not to your impressive age but to the fact that our friendship goes back over 35 years. I believe I was the first person ever to interview you, when I visited you at the farm while you were still very much working at Jaguar. You have gone on to become a great roving worldwide ambassador for Jaguar and, with your help on many occasions, I have gone on to write a few books! It is wonderful to have you as Patron of our international Jaguar E-type Club and we are looking forward to celebrating your 90th at a dinner at the House of Commons with Stirling and Susie in November, plus the 50th anniversary E-type celebrations next year. A very sincere thank you for all your support, considerable help and great friendship over the years. It is a privilege to know you and write about your wonderful role in the fantastic Jaguar story. Warmest best wishes from me and love from Julie and our team (Abi, Annelise, Louise and Mary), Philip Philip Porter |

Hello Norman well the big nine o,many happy returns! I remember when I started working with you all those years ago in the "temporary office" at Browns Lane and the many happy memories that I still have of those days and the constant back ache I now have due to the long hours spent on the pave at MIRA. Many things have happened since then to both of us and Heather and I wish you well and hope to see you in the very near future. Very best regards Neil Smith Neil and Heather Smith |

Hi Norman: As a long term Jaguar enthusiast (listening to Raymond Baxter's 1950's B.B.C. radio broadcasts from Le Mans as a young boy!) I have followed both your career and your achievements with interest and the utmost respect. May I take this opportunity to wish you all the very best for your 90th birthday. I hope I am still driving my XK120DHC when I am 90! In addition, I understand that the J.D.C. presented you with a lithograph of my painting, "Vers Geneve", depicting you driving 77 RW to the Geneva Auto Salon in l961. I do hope you enjoy the print. Best regards, Chris Phillips. Chris Phillips |

Norman, Best wishes on your birthday. Your contributions to the success of Jaguar are greatly appreciated. My father, Walt Hansgen, had many successes racing Jaguar cars which would not have been possible without your efforts toward the development of the cars. Many happy returns of the day to you Norman. I'm sorry I won't be able to join you at Pebble but it's just as well because they have a shortage of gin and limes and I was concerned you might end up shorted. I have instructed Gary Bartlett to Fed Ex a case of Beefeaters to your hotel as penance for my absence. The sad thing is even if you live to be 190, you will never be as handsome as I. Happy Birthday, you old goat. With Love and Respect, Steve Stephen Miller MD |

Hello Norman, many happy returns. My best friend Tim Brooks came to work in the BIW department at Jaguar around 1979-ish I think it was, after seven years at Rolls Royce in Crewe. You may remember him being introduced to you as he was given the factory tour on his first day by his boss. They came to your office and when he was introduced as a Quality Engineer from Rolls Royce your response still makes me laugh, even if it cant be printed here! It is always good to see you out and about at Stoneleigh and I very much enjoyed reading your big book. Have a great time on your birthday. Peter Peter Crespin |

Thank you, congratulations on making history and a job well done! Best Regards, Dave Ahlers Dave Ahlers / USA |

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DEAR NORMAN! ...with much love and many kisses and hugs from one of your biggest fans in the world (you know who in Florida). It is my hope that this note finds you well and in good spirits, and that your birthday celebrations are filled with laughter, smiles, loved ones, and all your favorite things. As you know, I admire and adore you and cherish the moments when I can hear you speak and just see your smile. When I visited England a few years ago, our track time spent in XKD505 at Goodwood was one of my life’s most priceless and thrilling experiences, and I still dream of the day. :-) For your 80th birthday, I sent you a note thanking you for all you have done for Jaguar and for the E-Type in particular. Your recent book allowed a unique window into your life, and I saw the depth of your knowledge, skills and character. You are a real man of quality, admired and emulated by those fortunate enough to know you, because a finer gent one could never meet. Thank you for everything you have done and are doing still! No doubt you have big adventures planned for the coming year. I’d really like to give you at least one big kiss for your birthday. When will you be coming over?
