JCNA Special Awards

Why They Were Established and What They Represent

JCNA has set up a new Special Awards Committee with two goals: To inform the JCNA membership about our club's four major achievement awards and to create interest and enthusiasm in competing to attain one of these awards. Committee members are expected to work to get the membership more involved in JCNA. They want every member to understand what JCNA competition is, to honor the people in whose names the awards are given and to want to be recipients themselves.

The four are: The Andrew Whyte Service Award, presented annually to a member who has contributed significantly to his/her JCNA affiliate or to JCNA as a whole; The Fred Horner Award, presented annually to the member who participates in the most sanctioned JCNA vehicle events; The Karen Miller Award, presented annually to the JCNA Newsletter Editor of The Year and the Dealer of the Year Award, given to the dealer that works most closely with a JCNA affiliate.

The Whyte, Horner and Miller awards all give recognition to individual members who contribute time, talent and hard work as well as dues to their club. There can be no greater satisfaction for a Jaguar enthusiast than to receive one of them.

This is JCNA’s most prestigious award for an individual club member. It commemorates Andrew Whyte who was for several years in charge of Jaguar worldwide public relations. He left the company to become a free-lance writer and, as the author of many books about Jaguar, was recognized as the company’s unofficial historian. His personal knowledge of the company was vast and he wrote the definitive biography, Jaguar, The History of A Great British Car. During his Jaguar career, Andrew gave unstintingly of his own time and talent to support the Jaguar enthusiast movement around the world on both local and national levels.

Why is this award important? Nominations for the Andrew Whyte Award are usually submitted by JCNA affiliate clubs on behalf of members who volunteer their services well beyond the norm. It is given for local service, national service or contributions in both areas. It is not so much a competitive trophy as it is a reward for hard work and dedication to JCNA.

Karen Christine Miller (1945-2003) was an active contributor to the growth of JCNA for more than 30 years. She chaired the original Concours Committee, co-wrote the JCNA Rule Book, served on the Business Committee, maintained the JCNA roster and was a Regional Director

She conceived and developed the Andrew Whyte and Fred Horner Awards and originated the JCNA AGM Technical Seminars and Annual Newsletter Awards. Professionally, Karen was Associate Editor of Jaguar Journal from 1985 and the Jaguar Cars North American Archivist from 1990 to 2003.

This award is presented annually to the JCNA affiliate newsletter editor who best represents Karen Miller’s talents and ideals as a writer, editor, historian and ultimate Jaguar club volunteer. The recipient will qualify by producing, in one year at least four newsletters to the highest standards of editorial content and production.

Why is this award important? Because a good newsletter is the lifeline for every local club. It contains news, the calendar of area event, technical advice and features of local interest. The editor who puts out a timely, well-produced publication packed with information is directly contributing to keeping the organization healthy and active.

The Fred Horner Sportsmanship Award commemorates Frederick S. Horner who was Executive Secretary of JCNA in the British Leyland years from 1970 to his retirement in 1979. He passed away in 1995. Fred was not only an administrator but a diplomat, able to resolve disputes between individuals and clubs with tactful firmness. His prime concern for JCNA was not competition but participation. He promoted Concours and other events as family outings to relax and enjoy Jaguar cars and the company of fellow members.

Fred’s oft-stated plan for starting the JCNA Concours Program was to give Clubs and families a nice day out. Competition was secondary to the goal of getting people with Jaguars together in good fellowship. His focus for JCNA was not in competition, but participation. He promoted Concours and other Club events as family outings – a time to relax and enjoy Jaguar cars and fellow members.

The Fred Horner Sportsmanship Award is based upon participation in sanctioned JCNA vehicle events: Concours, Slalom and Rally, regardless of how many of each event, the score obtained or the Jaguar entered.

Participation in all the events of a calendar year would be compiled by JCNA number and the award will be presented to the Member who participated in the most sanctioned events. In the event of a tie, there would be a random drawing to select the Award recipient. Once a Member wins the Fred Horner Sportsmanship Award, he or she will be excluded from receiving the Award again for the next 5 years.

The Fred Horner Sportsmanship Award recognizes JCNA members who are out and about with their Jaguars, sharing fellowship with other JCNA members. It promotes more participation, expands local activities, gets more Jaguars out in front of the public and promotes additional membership.

Get out and enjoy your Jaguars and the fellowship of other Jaguar owners!

The JCNA Dealer of the Year Award was first presented at the Annual Meeting in 2000.

This award recognizes a dealer for their close relationship with a JCNA club and for their support of and participation in local club events. The first honoree was Moore Jaguar of St. Louis.

Recognizing a Jaguar dealer each year is also a tribute to the local club or clubs which work with the dealer. It usually falls to the club members to approach the dealer management, describe the publicity and business s benefits of working with a Jaguar club and convince them to start supporting the club. If your JCNA affiliate club does not have a working arrangement with your local dealer effort should be made to establish one. Your JCNA Regional Director can be a big help in this.
