Parks: I have a 2005 X-Type Estate 3.0 that in the autumn of 2010 exhibited this exact problem! It took me a few months of discussing with the dealer (you need a new computer cough up $1600), and thinking there must be a better solution (have my computer rebuilt on my own ($800+) and also spending time on the forums searching for cheaper answers. The other x-type Jag forum (not this forum) participants figured it out but it was hard to keyword search this problem. It is really esoteric. Here's the issue:

My original factory battery was exactly 60 months old (sound familiar?). 2005-2010

It seems the computer is really sensitive to voltage levels. On startup the DSC and ABS warning lights would be on. But, on long distance journeys the DSC lights would go out (makes sense now, nice long slow charges), but on short around town journeys, or when the car sat for a few days the light would be on.

I changed the battery at COSTCO and voila, problem solved.

I was in UK and spoke with a Jag rep at a Classic Car show and really complained about that $1600 quote, and he said it is standard operating procedure to check battery voltage first thing on warning light issues and it sounds like the mechanic took a shortcut, or they warmed up the car and the voltage was just high enough to not trigger the problem. He said I bet the new computer would have been a rebuilt unit anyway and that it would have worked for a while and then as the battery degraded further you would have ended up with a new battery and never a refund for the computer. The battery does not have to be degraded enough to have problems with starting or other issues to affect the DSC, ABS, and other technical computer issues.

Let me know if this works for you!

Well, it's 2017, the Costco battery is exactly 60 months old, it's winter in the northeast USA, and my wife doesn't drive the x-type estate 3.0 long distances, and she recently mentioned the DSC light stays on! So, I charged up the battery overnight, and it hasn't repeated. That was a long cold patch, so the battery was obviously in a weakened state. Time for Battery Number 3! Will resolve when I have time, and it warms up a bit. In the meantime, this is confirmation of a working and cheap fix solution to a 'computer failure' in the X-Type when you are getting dashboard DSC and ABS warning lights that go out after a long drive. Save your money and check the age of your battery, and use a charger in cold weather from time to time to bring up to full charge if not using the car for distance. Good luck all!
