Heed George's advice William, you need the fault code to point to failure area. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say, given the age of the car and the specific symptoms you list, I suspect rear wheel speed sensor faults. Quite possibly disintegration of the reluctors on one or both rear axle joints. These are the ladder-like wheels that trigger the speed sensors. These corrode and come apart, and are no longer there to trigger the sensor. The result is exactly what you describe.
