While driving my 86 XJ-6 home I lost power like I was out of fuel. The car kept going at about 5 mph until I got off the interstate. After I turned it off it wouldn't start and I noticed the converter was red hot.Had it towed changed the converter still the same.If I pull the plug wires off #4 5 6 cylinders while the car is reved up there is no change. Cyl 1 2 3 pulled off the car will stop running. Compression is good, fuel pressure good, new plugs wires rotor and cap, fuel filter.Getting spark to all cylinders and the injectors are clicking but the car will still not idle smooth and no power. Also changed the power resistor and ECU unit

Carl,

I think you've melted down the catalytic converter matrix and the blob of melted catalyst is occluding the exhaust. The glowing red hot indicates that unburned fuel is getting to the cat, which is what causes it to overheat and melt.

Best thing to do is to remove the front cat and to take a look into it. It should be pretty obvious when you see the insides.

Keep in mind that a melted cat is a symptom and not the problem. You need to determine why unburned fuel is reaching the cat and to correct that problem, else you'll likely melt down any new cat you install.
