My new to me XK150S has been converted to Negative ground. Does anyone know if that should affect the function of the starting carb solenoid? The sensor wire had been disconnected and starting is a challenge without it. I wonder if that is why they did not reconnect.

That reversal of polarity should have no effect on the starting carburetor. Look at the mixture and the internal return spring.
