Hello to all. I am the owner of a 98 xj8, 149,000 miles on the odometer. I have decided to have a local mechanic replace the timing chains. I was primarily concerned with the upper chains and tensioners, (I had the trans rebuilt recently and was informed I have the old orange tensioners), my question is-is it necessary to replace the primary assemblies also, or are the upper assemblies the only problematic part of this repair. The mechanic insists that the whole timing chain assembly-primary and secondary must be replaced at the same time. I haven't read on any of the forums of the primary chains being an issue. I would appreciate any input and advice on how to approach this situation. The quote for the whole job, including parts is around seventeen hundred dollars. Thank you for any answers.
