Thanks guys. What i decided to do was to earth the battery to the body in the normal place and then take an earth strap from this point to the chassis. Seems to work well. I started this process as part of a plan to replace the two 6 volt batteries in series with 2 12 volt in parallel
This has resulted in a much livelier starter motor performance.
