Art,

We had a similar problem with the rear windows in my wife's 1990 XJ-S convertible and I rewired them so that they go up and down when we want them to and not when the car wants them to.

Here's the link to some pictures that I posted on on the Jag-Lovers site showing what I did: http://www.jag-lovers.org/snaps/snap_view.php3?id=1174156649

I'm very pleased with having manual control of the rear windows, it's a great temporary work around until I sort out what's really wrong (relays, motors, etc). It works so well, we'll probably keep it that way. BTW, I do know that a ratcheting motor on the right rear window contributed to it not going up and down reliably in the automatic mode. In my manual mode I can always assist the window a bit to get it to go up and down.

1989, so it's a pre facelift, so the motor, pump, and all the electrical switching and relays are in the storage compartment, on the right side, there should be a flimsy vinyl cover hiding it all, it is held in place with two of those plastic 90 degree trun fasteners. All this was relocated to the boot, above the battery, for the 2+2 convertibles.

Hi Art,

I recall from a past conversation (or reading it somewhere) that there is a set-screw or shaft key that has the habit of coming loose or drops out? If that has happened then the window hydraulics simply does nothing. Kinda like paddling a row-boat with one oar...

The other issue may be the hydraulic ram (can't remember what that widgit is called...) is on vacation and needs to be replaced/rebuilt.

I recall it is rather easy to expose the window hydraulics; try raising/lowering the top - to see what is happening.

Hope this helps!

Hi Art,

I recall from a past conversation (or reading it somewhere) that there is a set-screw or shaft key that can come loose? If that happens then the fix is to reset the screw (or key).

It is easy to expose the window mechanicals; try raising/lowering the top - to see if this might be the issue.

Hope this helps!

Hi ARt!
Might be the micro switch not activating the RRW.
Did the window feel 'sluggish'last time it worked?
Might be the wiring contacts to the motor.
