I recently had the power steering/water pump belt break on my 1995 V-12. By the time I got the car stopped, the engine had heated enough to blow out some of the coolant. Now that I have changed all the belts (quite a job) the check engine light is on. Can anyone tell me how to reset this?

I am traveling and thus cannot look at the scanner at the moment, but it was a standard scanner from Autozone, orange-yellow in color, "acctron" I believe. Cost about $120

As far as any particular car, the emissions sticker under the hood will state if it is a OBD II compliant model.

The situation is model year vs. date of production. Different markets may have different model years, even if the cars were made on the same day in the same factory. Which scanner did you order, and do you know if it will work with earlier models?

My 1995 is OBD II compliant and I have been able to reset with a standard ODB II code reader. However, mine is a 6 cyl. and the emissions sticker on the hood does designate as ODB II compliant. You are correct that the federal requirement to be compliant started with the 1996 model year,but obviously some cars were able to be compliant the year earlier. Have you checked your sticker and if you have the ODBII plug, have you tried to read the codes?

Well, after quite a bit of research, I have learned that the OBD11 system started in 1996. My car, which has the OBD11 plug under the dash is actually OBD1 compatible. Sorry, unhooking the battery wont solve the problem, but using a scanner which has OBD1 codes apparently will. I have ordered a cable, software and instructions to do this for $59. Since I love to work on my beauty myself (to learn what makes it tick) I don't want to take it to the dealer. I'll post the results later. Thanks for the advice.

I believe your car has OBD II. If it does, you can tell by a computer plug under the drivers side dash, and you have a scanner, you can use it to delete it. Alternatively, try one of the parts stores, like Autozone, who will pull the code ad can try to clear it. If it doesn't have OBD II, or don't have a scanner, you can try disconnecting the battery for a few minutes.

If the code reappears, you have another problem.
