I have a 1997 XJ6 and am planning to add a CD changer in the near future. Does anyone know if all XJ's are "wired" from the radio back to the trunk, and all I need to do is plug in the changer and mount it?

Thanks, Dave

Thanks for the additional information. I did notice a cable tie and black tape on the right side trunk arm that connects the truck lid to the car, so I will see if that is it. Thanks again.

It's thicker like a coax cable with a round connector about 1.5 - 2 inches. Pin holes in a circle to receive the connector from the cd changer. It won't have a very long lead and should be attached with a cable tie you cut to get it loose. Keep looking, it will be there. Check on both sides, the changer should be mounted in the middle, a little to the right so the cable could be be there too.

If you live in or near a relatively large city, there has to be a high end car stereo emporium ie: Tweeter or Sound Advice, whatever, offer the service manager a few bucks and they will be more than happy go with you out to your car and show you the connections. I 'm sure they will have a new unit to sell you, too.
Or you could get a used one from Gary Jagbits and still come out cheap without worring that you might mangle the wiring harness!
Good Luck'

Jim,

Sorry to bug you with this again, but I can't find that cable? There are plenty of wires, etc. back there, but the only cable that I saw that could be a possibility was dark blue. Is the cable thin like a power cord or thicker like a coax cable?

Thanks for all of your help.

It is on the left side under the back lining. They come clipped the bulkhead and feed out from behind. It will be a round black plug probably with a cap on it. There are a couple of units on now and more seem to come up all the time. They are an Alpine unit and were used on a lot of cars but if you get a Jaguar one the plug will be wired right. Virtually any one will work with the one variable being the mounting brackets but these are easy to get once you have the unit.

Thank you for the info on ebay...I was wondering about that as an option as well.

Regarding the wiring in the trunk...I understand it is located on the left side near the gas tank. Is this true? I also read it is not easy to find?

You might want to check ebay. I bought won for my '92 and a buddie brought one for his '95. Both Jaguar units. Both worked great. A lot of lease cars required you to buy the cd changer separate and most people kept them when they turned the car in. I see them all the time on ebay going for around $100. All the cases I know of there have been no problems as to their working. Basically any from '90 to '97 will plug right in

I understand. I found the new model number is the CHMS630 and it looks to be available. I know a guy that works for a local car stereo place so I will be sure to go to him with my info to make sure I get the correct unit. Thanks again for all of your help.

well maybe not any, as I mentioned above the CHMS620 is the one that i know works. if they no longer make it, check with a good car stereo place, when i bough mine (but that was in 98/99) Sound Advice looked up the model in their reference book.

then it's jsut a matter of attaching it in the boot and pluging it in.

Pascal,

Thank you for the response and information. So if I understand you, I can get any Alpine CD changer and it should work....just need to make sure the pin connection is correct.

Dave

on the X300, you can simply plug in an Alpine changer, the wiring is in the boot behind the trim. i had a 96 before the 99 and the system was only upgraded with the x308 in 98. in the x308, you have no choice but gettign the Jaguar unit.

back then I bought it from sound advice, under $300. their guides showed that an adpater was needed but that's incorrect. model nr is CHMS 620, don't know if it's still available, maybe a replacement is.

I sell them used for $500 and brand new for $775 free shipping no tax. The new changer is in a Jaguar box 1 year warranty and the used comes with a 6 month warranty. Of course new is always better than used.. if finances permit.

Hi Gary,

Thank you for providing the answer to my question. I would lean towards a new one. Do you sell used and new cd changers? If so, what type of warranty does a used cd changer come with?

Yes Dave your car is pre-wired from the factory, you simply remove the trunk interior panel under the rear parcel shelf and look for the black wire with the round connector on the end, it;s hard to find bundled with all the other wires but it's there, when you get the CD changer just plug it in and mount it, that's all it takes. Are you getting a new or used changer?
