Should the radiator cooling fans on my 70 XKE FHC continue to run after the ignition is switched off (assuming the coolant temperature demands the fans)? They do not continue to run when the ignition is switched off.

Mike look at the S3. I still have not found the bulletin for the S2 but if memory serves that function came in at the time load shedding and key buzzer became mandatory.

I don't believe E-Types were ever wired for after-run by the factory. However, it's easy enough to accomplish. Just switch the fan wire at the fuse panel. Connect it to any always-powered lug in the center of the fuse block,and add an inline fuse for safety. The fans will run until the otter switch turns off. Note that the XK block is heavy and has a lot of water capacity. As a result, the fans will cycle on and off several times due to thermo siphoning. It may take as long as 20 minutes to settle down. Make sure you have a good otter switch and a fresh battery. Modern cars that have this feature also have fan controls with more hysteresis to prevent excessive run time when on battery.

Dennis there was a change (can not find bulletin at this time) that allowed just what you described. It was a 1970 MY change. If you want the fans to run until temp lowers is is a simple swap on the fan relay. Your car was prop. improperly wired to an older wire chart. Either way is fine but if you do a lot of start and stop the later is handy for better AC.
